iOS 5 has been around for a couple of months now and it’s looking like a refresh is needed soon. With iOS 5, we saw Twitter making its way into the mix. Now, Facebook is seen as a possible addition to the next generation of iOS. With a new redesign also expected to occur, could iOS 6 be a whole new design in terms of design alone, or could we also see iOS 6 as the best iOS to debut yet? Anything is possible with Apple, so let’s take a look as what we expect to see out of iOS 6 when it is expected to debut.
One point we continue to see consistently mentioned about iOS 6 is about a design overhaul. Apple is expected to make designing improvements in iTunes, iBooks, and the App Store. They are said to be seen as improvements that will improve the purchasing experience for Apple users. From purchasing books to music, apps to magazines, Apple is expected to make iOS 6 a software that will feature a whole new design. We continue to hear the word “major” associated with this design update. How exactly the design can be this major is beyond me, however it seems to be hinted that the design will be revolutionary in the way we use iTunes and other purchasing aspects with Apple. One point includes making purchasing more social, and this is where Facebook comes in.
Yes, you read this right. Apple is expected to take the Google out of Google Maps’ integration with the iPhone and iOS. Apple is expected to make their own mapping application in conjunction with another company to help out. This is said to be due to control disputes. However, Google isn’t expected to be one dumped in this break up. Google will have an event June 6th announcing new plans for the Google Maps brand, both “physically and virtually”. Apple isn’t going to get the bad end of the stick though. The new Apple mapping application is expected to include 3D technology!
Finally, we expect Facebook to make its Apple debut with iOS 6. As we see currently with Twitter, Facebook and iOS 6 will be a relationship seen throughout the iPhone. From status updates to integration in Photos, Facebook and iOS 6 is hinting to be a great match made to happen already. If I may digress a bit, I would love to see improvements with Siri with iOS 6. If Facebook is being able to make an Apple debut with iOS 6, it’s only fitting to allow updating your social networking status with Siri as well. That would certainly hint something revolutionary. The Facebook integration is sparking mentioning about Facebook’s ever-so-controversial privacy issues. This is the main reason why it is reported that Apple is currently working out issues with this as a way of noting what can and cannot be shared with the integration.
It’s important to note that Apple being Apple, something could change in the next week and a half (see again: Facebook/Ping). But as of right now, Facebook is a go in iOS “Sundance”. One thing still being hammered out according to our sources is exactly how sharing will work. Sharing is the other big part of the iOS/Twitter integration, and will be important for iOS/Facebook integration as well. But Facebook is significantly more complicated than Twitter in that there are all kinds of permissions for what you can post where and who can see what. And Open Graph adds another layer of complexity to all of this.
As with most things with Apple, when nothing else is certain, one thing that is is a date for when something is released. As of yet, we don’t know an exact date. However, with all things Apple, a schedule is always followed. We can expect iOS 6 is make a June 11th debut, just in time for WWDC. Be on the look out between later this month and next month.
