Disaster, at some point it might strike your Mac, Its always best to be prepared for situations like this and if your not using Time Machine as often as possible or your simply a little clumsy and you spill the odd drink too near that Mac of yours, This might be just the thing for you!

When Apple released Lion it shipped with the ability to make a hidden ‘Recovery HD’ on your Mac’s Internal Hard Drive, but what if your whole drive fails, Not only will you have lost your data and Mac OS you will have also lost your only way of restoring your OS. Fast forward to now and Apple have released their ‘Lion Recovery Drive Assistant’ this fantastic little utility allows you to make a bootable external USB drive, Hears How;

1) First do the obvious and download it from this address: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1433

2) Once downloaded open the disk image file and double tap the icon inside.

3) Accept the licence agreement, Then it will start searching for a USB drive to install to, if you haven’t done so yet find a 2GB or bigger  USB Flash Drive and plug it into your mac. WARNING: This Will Erase ALL Data On That USB so check it first make sure there are no pictures of your first birthday on it!

4) Select your drive from the list and let the assistant do the work for you. your Done!

The whole process takes just under 2 minutes on this mac but your milage may vary based on CPU and RAM, Okay now all thats left to do is pat your self heartily on the back and stash the USB away safe until the day comes when you need it!
