Apple released the very popular Smart Cover, side by side with the iPad 2. Being a wonderful accessory to keep your iPad 2′s beautiful screen protected – the Smart Cover undoubtedly became one of the most popular accessories for the iPad 2.

Fast forward to the New iPad (often incorrectly called the iPad 3) and the Smart Cover’s legitimacy as a top iPad accessory was still second to few others. The Leather and Polyurethane iPad display covers definitely complimented the iPad well.

Then came WWDC 2012. While not nearly as exciting to the likes of Mountain Lion or the Retina MacBook Pro – the iPad Smart Case was a nice silver coin among the treasures. The Smart Case joined the innovation of the (similarly named) Smart Cover while providing the all around protection that many have long yearned for. Many of the people who opted not to buy the Smart Cover likely did so because they either preferred all around protection (as offered by the Smart Case) or preferred the naked beauty of their iPad.

While there is a nominal price difference between the Smart Case and Smart Cover of the iPad – they also appeal to two different groups of iPad owners. While the Smart Cover simply protects the display – the newly announced Smart Case provides all around protection on a hefty investment. The increased protection, however, comes at a minimal premium. Whereas the Polyurethane Smart Cover retails for $39 at the Apple Online Store, the Polyurethane Smart Case is offered for just $10 more at $49.

One thing to note about the Smart Case is that there is no option for Leather – as there is with the Smart Cover. If you’re looking for another decent all around case, check out our review of the Belkin Snap Shield for iPad 2.
