The iPad 3 Is Now Here…(Or Is It?)

The iPad 3 is finally here. However, there’s one thing about that sentence that is a bit of a lie. The iPad 3 isn’t the device that is here, Apple didn’t name the new iPad such, but the new iPad is simply known as iPad. There are no numbers, nothing about HD, the new iPad is simply called iPad. Is Apple taking the distinctive route usually taken by celebrities and actors with one name, trying to make a statement, or could Apple just simply not think of a name better than just iPad. We probably won’t know, but iPad is now the name and the features that it holds are pretty nice. Let’s take a look at them now.

iPad Avaliability

The iPad will be available for pre-order today. You can also pick it up at the store on March 16th. The iPad will be available in the launch countries from the United States to Canada, Australia to the UK. There will also be availability in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. With European customers in Germany, France, and Switzerland. The iPad will be available internationally outside the launch sites by March 23rd. The iPad 2 will still be available for purchase, for $399 for the 16 GB WIFI version only. The iPad will be available for $499 for 16GB WIFI, $599 for the 32GB WIFI, and $699 for the 64GB WIFI version, there isn’t a 128 GB option for neither WIFI nor WIFI + 3G, despite the hopes of many. The WIFI + 3G version will be available for $629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB and $829 for 64 GB.

iPad Specs

The new iPad will include an A5X chip, which will provide for improved performance. This is following the A5 predecessor. The new iPad will also include a Retina display that, while the same size as the iPad 2, will have a much a better appearance that you have to see to believe. As Apple put it, in a corny way, the new Retina display is “Resolutionary”. The new iPad has a 10 hour battery life and is a bit heavier and thicker.

iPad + LTE

The new iPad now comes with LTE support for AT&T and Verizon. Additionally, international users who have LTE support can also use it with their respective carrier. There is also support for the Personal Hotspot. The 10 hour battery life will come in handy for extended LTE support. However, as a friend on Twitter mentioned, with endless carriers cutting the limits individuals can use when it comes to data, many individuals may not be able to fully test the limits of their battery lives with LTE all in one day or at least in one sitting.

Better Camera and Now with Dictation

The new iPad comes with an improved camera, five megapixel rear and an iSight front facing camera. There is also video recording support for up to 1080 p HD. This is now in line with the iPhone 4S’s HD video capabilities. Additionally, the new iPad also has voice dictation support. This is the closest at the moment that we may get to Siri for iPad. However, for now, if you aren’t familiar with voice dictation, you have the ability to say what you want your iPad to type.

Your iPad, Protected

Lastly, one great addition to the event today was the announcement of Apple Care+ for iPad support. If you aren’t familiar with Apple Care+ support, it allows protection for accidental damages and an extended warranty. The extended warranty now allows for three years of iPad protection. If, and we hope it doesn’t happen, the inevitable occurs where you have an accidental damage, you have two chances both costing you $49 each. Just make sure you sign up within 30 days of you purchase. As of now, we don’t know the cost of Apple Care+ for iPad.

Now that you’re planning to purchase the new iPad, why not take advantage of the many discounts out there with Apple? Search online for apple voucher codes and start saving today!

iOS 5 is finally here.

iOS has been released earlier today and comes with many rocking new features, such as Wireless Syncing, Reminders, iMessage, Notification Centre and more. As well as including many new features, this OS seems to be a lot faster than iOS 4.

We strongly recommend that you upgrade to iOS 5, it’s easy, and it’s free. Simply connect your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad to iTunes and follow the prompts.

In the days to come, we’ll review iOS 5, so keep your eyes peeled.

Remembering Steve

Our world was blessed on February 24, 1955, when Steve Jobs entered the world.

Steve Jobs is the Chairman of the Board of Apple, which he co-founded in 1976. Thanks to the hard work, determination and perseverance of Steve, Apple is the leader in technology, from the revolutionary iPhone, App Store, iPod, iPad, iTunes, Mac and more.

Not only was Steve a creative genius, he was also an incredible person. Every time an Apple unveiling occurred, Steve was there, turtle neck, jeans and sneakers, gleaming at every person in the room with sheer gratitude. Steve aimed for the stars, and that’s the biggest lesson to all of us.

Without Steve Jobs, advancements in technology may have never been made. Steve Jobs has not only been the creator of Apple, he created the fans, the culture, the gleaming smile whenever you take an Apple product out of the box. Not only has he left an imprint in the world of technology, but for Apple fans especially, he has left an imprint in our heart.

The Apple website confirmed the devastating news, and created a page to pay respects:

“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and worth with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple”

All of us at TheAppleFreak would like to take a moment to reflect and pray for his family and friends, who have had such an enormous loss. We all feel like we’ve lost a close friend. It’s hard to put our thoughts into words. We pass our condolences to Steve’s family and friends in their time of need. The world has lost an amazing visionary and genius who will be forever missed.

Steve, you will be missed.

iPhone 4S Unveiled – The Scoop

Just a few hours ago, Apple held it’s special event for the iPhone range. Although it was quite weird not having Steve Jobs address the crowd, Tim Cook did a nice job.

Today, Apple unveiled it’s next generation iPhone, the iPhone 4S. So what’s new? What has stayed the same?

The iPhone 4S keeps the thin, glass panel, aluminium banded iPhone 4 design, with the exact same dimensions. We are thinking that all iPhone 4 cases will also fit the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4S also keeps the same great 3.5 inch Retina display, with a whopping 960×640 pixels.

As far as data speeds go, download speed is double on the iPhone 4S (14.4mbps from 7.2mbps) which will result in faster application downloads, web browsing and video viewing when you’re out and about.

Storage capacity wise, the iPhone 4S doesn’t just have two size options like the iPhone 4, 16GB and 32GB, but it also has a huge 64GB version, priced at $399.00 with a contract.

The camera is a big thing that has changed, not only has its megapixels been boosted from 5 to 8, but it also has faster shutter speeds and much better conditions in low light, thanks to the new aperture. It also uses start of the art image sensors, much like the ones found it DSLR cameras. The iPhone 4S can record 1080p video, a step up from the iPhone 4 which can only record 720p.

The iPhone 4S also rocks a new antenna system, not only does it utilise the same aluminium band that was in the iPhone 4, there’s a second antenna inside. This means that if you get the death grip of the iPhone 4, it’ll switch to the inside antenna, giving you perfect signal no matter where you are.

The processor is another thing thats changed. Instead of the single core A4 chip found on the iPhone 4, Apple is now using its famous A5 chip, with dual core processing and an enhanced GPU. This will make for a better gaming experience and make the device more smooth overall.

The iPhone 4S can now be used worldwide, using world mode technology. The iPhone 4 was GSM only, meaning that if you wanted to take your US iPhone overseas, it would be a struggle to find a carrier that would work for you. Now, this isn’t an issue. This is a really nice improvement seeing as some iPhone owners travel a lot for business.

The best feature, in my opinion, of the iPhone 4S is Siri. Siri lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and more. You can ask Siri a question by just talking, and Siri will give you an answer. You can tell Siri to schedule you a meeting for Friday at noon, and Siri will pop it in your calendar. Siri can do pretty much anything. It’s basically the iPhone voice control software on steroids. For me, and for a lot of people, Siri is the best feature in the iPhone 4S.

All in all, the iPhone 4S is a great next generation iPhone, and we look forward to see them in the flesh. We just can’t wait to see what the iPhone 4S will  bring come release, 14th October.

New Kindle Models – Brief Overview

A few days ago, Amazon’s Press Release was expected to bring the announcement of new generation kindles, as well as perhaps an iPad rival. Well, our hopes came true.

The first generation of Amazon’s prized e-reader was released in 2007, with the baseline model retailing for a whopping $399.00. With todays advancements in technology, the new kindle models are sleeker, cheaper and better than ever. Amazon are still selling the Kindle 3, but we believe that they’re just clearing stock and will soon phase it out.

The Amazon Kindle line saw a strong refreshment, with new prices and new designs. The baseline model is now simply known as the “Kindle”, retailing for $79.00 from Amazon. The new model rocks and all new design with a lighter body (weighing less than six ounces), a smaller body (without screen size reduction) and the same brilliant E Ink display that’s winning over the hearts of book lovers. The Kindle rocks 2GB of on-device storage, with added cloud storage. This is also the cheapest Kindle model to date, meaning the Kindle can now reach more pockets.

The next model in the Kindle line is the “Kindle Touch”. The Kindle Touch brings touch to the kindle, with a brilliant multi-touch display. Amazon has developed E Ink touch screens, which is a huge breakthrough for book lovers. The “Kindle Touch” is slightly more expensive, retailing at $99 for the wifi only model and $149 for the wifi and 3G model. Both models have 4GB of on-device storage and are definitely a huge breakthrough.

The top of the line model is the Kindle Fire. This is Amazon’s attempt at an iPad competitor. With a brilliant colourful, bright, multitouch display, the Kindle Fire is a brilliant start. Not only can you read books, you can access Amazon’s 100,000 movies and TV shows, as well as games, magazines and browse the web, which even supports Flash (something Apple hasn’t quite figured out yet). You can also listen to your favourite music, which you can stream direct from Amazon’s Cloud Drive. The best part about the Kindle Fire is the price, at only $199, you can’t go wrong. We’re predicting that, after a few months, this may outsell the iPad, as it is truly affordable. The only negative about the Kindle Fire is the screen, although brilliant for web browsing, applications and movies, eye strain on a bright, back-lit colour screen is inevitable.

So after about a week, the Kindle Fire has sold more than all other models combined in pre-orders, and is expecting to sell out fast. What will this mean for the iPad? All we know is that Apple are going to have to built the iPad better, cheaper and lighter to win the Kindle Fire’s market over.

Mac App Alternatives #2 – Safari

Safari is one of the applications that comes with OSX that bothers a lot of people. It’s somewhat sleek design is overseen by slow loading times and constant crashes. I’d always recommend a switch from Safari, so here’s the three alternatives that we most recommend. Please keep in mind that we’re talking about running this on a Mac, not on the iPhone or the iPod touch.

1. Google Chrome – Google Chrome is undeniably the fastest web browser available, it’s simplistic design and lack of third party add ons allows for a seamless, powerful browsing experience. Just in-case you don’t believe the claim that this is the fastest, take a peep at this article. This was written way back in 2008, so Chrome has dramatically improved and is now even faster. Although Chrome is fast and fun, it’s basic design may fair “too basic” for advanced users, and it’s lack of add-ons may turn people in another direction. Chrome has web-applications however, which aren’t add-ons, but merely “links” to games and online services. If you’re looking for a simple, fast web-browsing experience, Chrome is definately the browser for you.

2. Mozilla Firefox – Mozilla Firefox is a really nice alternative to Apple’s built-in web browser, Safari. Firefox is an intense web browser, and performs well in most aspects, it’s a nice all rounder. Mozilla Firefox has an endless labyrinth of add-ons (free and paid) that can enhance, enrich and enlighten your browsing experience. The biggest negative about Firefox that turns people away is the fact that it is known to be heavy on CPU. This is supposedly due to the add-ons hogging little parts of the CPU, which, if you have a dozen or so, could really slow down your system. If CPU isn’t an issue, and you’d like to make the most of your web experience with add-ons, I’d recommend Firefox.

3. Camino – Out of the three applications we’re highlighting in this editorial, Camino is without a doubt the least known. Camino’s tag line accurately describes their product, “simplicity with a dash of flavour”. What’s nice about Camino is “Tab Overview”, which lets you quickly see what you have open at a glance, this is particularly useful (for people like me, who have around 40 tabs open at once). Camino boasts a really cute interface, however it may be “too fun” for some people, with large, colourful buttons which can, sometimes, get in the way. The worst thing about Camino is the speed, it’s simply not as snappy as Firefox, and certainly slow in comparison to Chrome. If you’re looking for a simple, easy to view browser, Camino might just be the browser of your dreams.

__________

So which is best? After discussion with various writers and editors here at TheAppleFreak that, again, the best choice will come down with your personal preference. I personally use Google Chrome due to the speed, whilst others use Firefox due to the myriad of add-ons available. Camino is the simplest of the bunch, with nice, added features that would appeal to someone who wants simple, easily viewable web browsing. If you wanted to go by popularity, W3Schools revealed that Firefox is the most popular web browser, with a huge 40.6% of the market. Whichever browser alternative you choose, you’ll probably never want to go back to Safari.

What To Expect On The 4th?

If you consider yourself an Apple nerd then you will undoubtedly know of “Apple’s October 4th Press Event” With A Tagline Of “Lets talk iPhone”. The tagline suggests the introduction of apples new iPhone 5, But what else could we expect from Tim Cook? Here’s My Top 5 Things To Expect!

Number 1:

iPhone 5 (Duh): I would expect to see the new iPhone landing with an; upgraded camera possibly 8MP, Apple A5 bringing increased processor speeds, upgraded display and a change to body design. Design mockups seem to show an enlarged home button, this seems a little out of Apple characture but worth keeping an eye out for.

Number 2:

TheAppleFreak has already mentioned the introduction of a white iPod touch with very minor changes to hardware. No major changes are to be expected but apple will surly give the iPod some screen time during the keynote. Also, early indications pointed to the iPod having a GPS chip but those have gone away now!

Number 3:

I refer you to another TheAppleFreak post called a iOS5 Sneak Peak It would seem that Apple have been entirely honest with us on the iOS front, but in true apple style I’m sure there’ll be some nice surprises.

Number 4:

Sources have been pointing towards some minor refreshes to the Mac line up, upgrades to the MacBook Air, Macbook Pro & iMac are to be expected but don’t pin any hopes on it as the invite does clearly say “Lets talk iPhone” So the mac might not get the limelight On The 4th

Number 5:

iCloud, Apples answer to world hunger, Joke. No iCloud is Apples all singing all dancing web cloud service, I had the privilege to test iCloud, and I can testify to its features. Its technically sound, If it can rise to the competition of Amazon, Microsoft And Dropbox remains to be seen…

One Last Thing?

Apple nearly always plays this card, towards the end of the keynote the italics text will show “One Last Thing” and the crowd will go nuts, it remains to be seen if Tim Cook can inspire such enthusasum in the viewers. This part is very hard to predict, last year it was the Apple TV, It would be logical to expect a minor or major refresh in the Apple TV but I don’t believe it will be worthy of the closing part of the keynote.

And that wraps up my predictions for the 4th. Be sure to read over those articles, And Tune Your Macs Into Apple.com For 10Am October 4th.

Back to School Phone Guide – Which Phone is for you?

Just started the school year? Looking for a new phone? Then this comprehensive guide will hopefully give an insight to what phone you should buy for the new school year. We’ll cover styles of use, features and most importantly price. We’re dividing the phones on offer this fall into three categories, messaging phones, media/entertainment phone and ease-of-use phones.

Let’s get started.

NOTE: All above prices are with AT&T with 24 month service. Prices elsewhere may or may not be cheaper, depending on your handset. We’re simply stating the price of the handset and if it requires a data plan. The prices will obviously vary depending on the amount of voice and messaging you desire.

MESSAGING PHONES

Are you a heavy messenger?

If you’re an individual who likes to keep on top of messages and emails, then I’d recommend a phone with a QWERTY keyboard. These phones are excellent for shooting out messages in a flash, and are generally well built and affordable. Here’s the list of phones that we’d recommend.

  • Palm Pixi Plus.

The Palm Pixi Plus is no longer in production, so if you want one of these, you’d better snap it up fast! These phones are equipped with HP’s infamous webOS, something that people either love or hate. Overall, the touch screen is a nice feature that most QWERTY phone’s don’t have, and messaging is a breeze on these keys. The only bad thing about this phone is the design and build quality. All plastic with gummy, sticky feeling buttons? Surely Palm could have done better.

Price: FREE upon activation of a 24mo contract. You’ll also need to pick up a data service plan, starting at $15 per month. Also, on top of that, add voice minutes and messaging extras.

  • Blackberry Curve

The Blackberry Curve is Blackberry’s “entry-level” device, however this phone sure packs a punch. Blackberry has won the hearts of millions of people around the globe for their simple yet elegant business design. Blackberry’s have one of the best e-mail services on the world and Blackberry Messenger will let you keep up with your friends for free. The bad thing about this Blackberry and, well, Blackberry’s in general is the camera is awful, to say the least. The Curve has a mere 2MP camera, so if you grab this phone, be sure to pack a camera for college. Another great thing about Blackberry’s is that, in my personal opinion, they have the best call quality. If I were you, pay the extra cent and pick up a Blackberry over the Palm Pixi, it’ll serve you well.

Price: $0.01 upon activation of a 24mo contract. You’ll also need to pick up a data service plan, starting at $15 per month. Also, on top of that, add voice minutes and messaging extras.

  • Sharp FX

The Sharp FX is the younger brother to the Sharp Sidekick family, rocking a similar design and similar functionality. If you’re a heavy messenger that needs a larger keyboard than a Blackberry, this is the phone for you. With a neat slide-out QWERTY keyboard as well as a full touch screen, this phone is the best of both worlds. The camera is nothing to gloat about, totalling 2MP. What’s nice about this phone is that IM (instant messaging) is a built in feature, with no need to download additional software and applications.

Price: FREE upon activation of a 24mo contract. You don’t need to pick up a data plan with this, so theres a large saving in itself. Also, on top of that, add voice minutes and messaging extras. AT&T recommend that you select an unlimited messaging plan, as you message a heap on this particular handset.

____________________________________________

MEDIA/ENTERTAINMENT PHONES

Do you like playing games?

If you’re like me and like having access to thousands of games and applications to keep you entertained (and drain your battery) you’d probably be best to pick a multimedia type phone. These phone’s generally tend to be the priciest (as they’re versatile and can do everything).

  • iPhone 4.

Obviously I can’t write an article without mentioning the iPhone 4. Hailed by some as “the best smartphone in existence”, you can’t really go wrong with the iPhone. The best thing about the iPhone is the app store, which boasts hundreds of thousands of applications, most of which are free or really cheap! The cameras great (5MP) and with 16GB or a whopping 32GB of storage, you’ll have no problem keeping all your music, videos and photographs on this phone. The only downside about the iPhone is the price. It tends to be one of the most expensive smartphones on the market.

Price: 16GB/$199 and 32GB/$299 upon activation of a 24mo contract. You’ll also need to pick up a data service plan, starting at $15 per month. Also, on top of that, add voice minutes and messaging extras

  •  iPhone doesn’t push your buttons? Prefer Android? Let me introduce to you the Samsung Captivate.

It’s a beast of a phone with a solid 5MP camera, Swype texting technology, super large amoled display and a huge 1GHZ processor. The screen on the Captivate is absolutely gorgeous, and in my opinion, ever better than the iPhone’s “retina” display. This phone is certainly an iPhone contender and if you don’t want an iPhone, I’d recommend this phone as it truly captivates you with its brilliant display. The best part of the Samsung Captivate is the price.

Price: $0.01 upon activation of a 24mo contract. You’ll also need to pick up a data service plan, starting at $15 per month. Also, on top of that, add voice minutes and messaging extras.

If you happen to dislike iOS and Android, perhaps Windows Phone 7 will tickle your fancies?

  • HTC Surround

The HTC Surround is an extremely polished phone that I’d consider if I could get a new phone. Not only does it run Windows Phone 7, a simplistic, efficient and clean OS, it boasts a myriad of nice features. Windows Phone 7 is neat because it fully integrates with Microsoft Office, Xbox Live, Bing search and Zune. It’s 5PM camera with 5x zoom is certainly pleasing to photographers, whilst it’s slide out speakers will please even the most fussy audio fanatic. I think this is an all-round great phone and strongly recommend it to anybody who isn’t after an iPhone or Android phone.

Price: FREE upon activation of a 24mo contract. You’ll also need to pick up a data service plan, starting at $15 per month. Also, on top of that, add voice minutes and messaging extras.

________________________________________________

EASY TO USE PHONES

Don’t really care for all the extra bells and whistles? If you’re not into apps, high definition cameras, full qwerty keyboards and all those bells and whistles, you could save a small fortune on picking a basic, classic phone.

  • AT&T F160.

If you’re on a tight budget and don’t need all the added features of a smart phone, I think this may be the phone for you. The AT&T F160 is certainly not winning any awards but if all you’d need a phone for is light texting and the occasional phone call, pick this phone up. It’s free and the best part about this phone on AT&T is that you aren’t required to pick up a data plan. This is going to save you at LEAST $360 over the 24month contract.

Price: $30 upon activation of a 24mo contract. After you pay, you can claim a $30 mail-in rebate to drop the price to $0. You don’t need a data plan, which saves you a small fortune over the 24months. Also, on top of that, add voice minutes and messaging extras.

  • Samsung Rugby.

If you’re looking for something a little more rugged that you can take out without fear of cracked plastic and glass, I’d strongly recommend the Samsung Rugby. It’s military level rugged design is second to none and you can throw this phone around with confidence. It also acts as a walkie-talkie which is pretty neat if you were on-site and needed voice access. You can throw this phone in your school bag and pencil case without any fear, and, best of all, it’s cheap.

Price: $99 upon activation of a 24mo contract. Also, on top of that, add voice minutes and messaging extras.

  • Samsung Evergreen

The Samsung Evergreen is a nice little phone that is feature packed and is well worth it’s price. Not only does it have the simplicity of a basic phone, it also has the slide-out keyboard just incase you need to type out a long message or email. The camera is nothing to be excited about, with only 2MP, but this phone doesn’t advertise to be a camera replacement. This phone is actually a world phone, meaning that you can take it overseas and it will be compatible with local networks. This is a nice feature if you’re travelling frequently, and need to constantly change sim cards. You can also multitask on this phone, you can be in a call and browsing the web at the same time.

The major downside about the easy-to-use phones is that you won’t get a rich application store. If you’re lucky to have one at all, you’ll only have a small handful of applications. If you’re a type of person who would like to constantly discover and try new applications, games and services, we recommend you look within the entertainment phone section of this editorial. If you want access to hundreds of thousands of application, I’d recommend looking into the iPhone, see “Entertainment” section of this editorial.

____________

So there you have it, three “back to school” phones from each category, QWERTY messaging phones, all-round media smartphones and your basic phones for calling and texting. Please keep in mind that we’ve only selected three phones from each category just to show the diversity, however there is a myriad of other phones available.
