The Lytro Review

When taking photos, one complaint I always have is with focusing. I hate when I take an amazing photo and the only thing that messes it up is the focusing being out of place. I mean to focus on my friend, but I focus on the passing car instead. Don’t you ever wish you could take control of the photos you take? Lytro is the camera that puts the control back to you. The camera uses light field technology that allows you to take the photo, and focus later. Lytro is a small little camera, but it packs a revolutionary punch. Is it worth the price? Does the added control sacrifice image quality? Let’s take a look and find out.

Hardware

It is very hard to compare Lytro with a camera in any type of way. Lytro has been called everything from something resembling lipstick to a telescope like device. Lytro is a lens on the front. The sides of Lytro are left bare, and the bottom is where you’ll find the USB port and the power button. The back reveals the touch screen. The top is the shutter button. The Lytro has a rubber grip, perfect for better grip and preventing your new device from damage. It’s pretty simple, nothing really to learn how to do or anything that is too complicating. However, because of being used to a regular camera, Lytro is a bit awkward to use. It is something that takes getting used to.

Lytro’s Interface

The simple hardware complements the even simpler software that Lytro holds. Taking a photo is very simple to do. Navigating is done through swiping from one area to another. From the main screen to viewing all of your photos, everything is done through swiping. Swiping up allows you to see settings, from battery life, to going to settings, and more. You can view your photos by swiping to the left. From there, going to the right will take you back to the main view screen. Despite the ease, the screen itself is a bit too low quality to compliment the photos you take.

How it Works

To begin, when you want to take a photo, all you have to do is press either the power button or the shutter button. When you want to take the photo, just press the shutter button. It’s very simple, no need to go to certain presets or settings, just shoot and you’re done. Going to more settings allow you to zoom in, tap to focus, and more. If you want to maximize the possibilities from Lytro, you can connect to your Mac (the only operating system currently supported), and you can send off to Facebook, on the website for maximum sharing, or export as a JPEG photo.

Conclusion

By no means will Lytro be the only camera for any individual. For those who are willing to sacrifice quality, they usually can only do so if the price is cheaper. Those willing to pay more are expecting the best quality their money can afford. The Lytro truly offers neither. The price tag is on the high end, and the quality is way better in much cheaper price ranges. However, it’s something sad to say due to the fact that there is so much potential with the amazing design and uniqueness. If you have the money, Lytro can be a great “just-for-fun” camera for the time being. However, for those who can wait a bit, you’ll have to wait for Lytro to make a couple of improvements.

Purchasing Options

Lytro is available in blue and grey for $399, only available in 8GB. The red is the only camera available in 16GB, costing $499. Lytro is available on the website.

Belkin Snap Shield for iPad 2 Review

If you’re lucky enough to own an iPad 2, you’ll want to invest some money into protecting the screen, back and sides, to ensure complete protection. Apple’s Smart Cover is a brilliant little cover, but it lacks protection for the back. So what can you do? Buy a back case for your iPad, like the Belkin Snap Shield. The Belkin Snap Shield will run you $29.99 (Directly from BELKIN) and is available at most electronics retailers, but is this case worth it’s price?

The Snap Shield is constructed out of a soft touch plastic and comes in various colors, Black, Pink and Clear. As for build quality, this thing isn’t the best. We’ve only had ours for about two weeks and there are cracks along the sides and a myriad of hairline cracks. Keep in mind, we haven’t thrown the iPad around with this case, just merely placing it on tables is enough to crack this case. Durability is the most important factor in an iPad case, and the Belkin Snap Shield simply doesn’t live up to the standard.

Belkin Snap Shield for iPad 2

Protection wise, the Snap Shield does it’s job. It’s entire purpose is to protect the back of the iPad from scratches, dirt and other nasties that can damage the façade of your iPad, and it does that extremely well. Saying this however, don’t go dropping your iPad with the Snap Shield on, as you won’t be pleased with the results. Belkin claims that the case is impact resistant, but we wouldn’t recommend that you test it out.

As far as compatibility with the Smart Cover, the Belkin Snap Shield works like a dream. There are generous cutouts for the volume rockers, buttons and ports, unlike some cases which make switching the volume impossible. Also, it’s worth noting that the cutout for the smart cover magnet is absolutely perfect, it is so precise. Belkin certainly gains points for the smart cover compatibility.

All in all, the Belkin Snap Shield for the iPad 2 is a good case. It does what it is designed to do. It works flawlessly with Apple’s Smart Cover, giving the protection that the Smart Cover lacks. Saying this, however, it’s cheaply constructed plastic body that shows hairline cracks after mere days of light use let’s the product down. Alas, for this reason, we wouldn’t recommend the Belkin Snap Shield.

Kindle Review (4th Generation – $79)

The fourth generation Kindle, released by Amazon in August, 2011, is the thinnest, cheapest and best kindle ever. It rocks an all new design, added features and lower price tag than ever. We were lucky enough to get our hands on one of these brilliant devices, thus we’re writing this review. So let’s get started.

Our Reviews of the $79 Kindle Show That It's An Awesome Device

You open the packaging (which is amazingly easy to open, may we add) to find the Kindle itself, a Micro-USB to USB charging cable and a piece of paper telling you how to turn on your Kindle, and where the buttons are and what they do. Nothing else. Amazon is definitely doing it’s part to save the planet, as the packaging is recycled.

Let’s just talk about the economic factors of why Kindle’s are brilliant. Firstly, the Kindle only costs $79 (ad-supported version). Now, I’m no expert on how much everyone has in their pockets, but I believe that compared with mortgages, bills, internet costs, phone costs and whatever else you need, $79 is a mere price to pay for such a brilliant device. Now for the actual costs of each book. An average, new release, popular book sells in stores for around $30. On the Kindle, the same book would sell for around $10. After your first few Kindle purchases, your savings will pay for the device. And also, books that are out of copyright (published before 1923) are all free, every day. Also, think of all the trees that you are saving by not buying 300 pages of paper. It’s really a win win. Publishers don’t have to print books, saving the trees and saving you money.

The design of the kindle is absolutely beautiful, and has, without doubt, surpassed all previous models. The Kindle is the thinnest, lightest and chicest model ever. Weighing a feather-like six ounces, and being pencil thin (8mm), this is the lightest book you’ll ever carry. This is a space saver if you decide to travel and if you like reading. You can hold 1,400 books for just six ounces, how much do you think that they would weigh if they were paperback books? We haven’t even mentioned the screen, at six inches, it’s just like reading a regular paperback book. The screen uses e-Ink technology, meaning that it is not backlit and is designed to look just like a piece of paper (which it does) and as a result, will not strain your eyes. The only downside to this is you can’t read in the dark, but you can’t ever read a paperback in the dark so you can grab a torch. There are four buttons along the bottom, from left to right they are Back, Keyboard, Settings/Options and Home. There is also a directional keypad in the centre, and forward and back buttons along the side. One really neat feature is that there are forward and back buttons on both sides, making a comfortable reading experience whether you are left-handed or right-handed.

Reading experience is an absolute joy on Amazon’s Kindle. I was on vacation recently and read for the entire duration of my nine hour flight, and found no eye strain. We believe that this factor is the most important for any e-Reader, and the Kindle 4 certainly passes all of our tests in that aspect. Many people sitting near me on the plane asked what device I was using and how much it costed, they were very interested to swap the wads of books for one slim-line device.

As far as user interface goes, the Kindle’s is not the best. That’s really my only gripe about the system. The menus don’t look great, they look messy, plain and boring. This is something that can easily be fixed in a software update, however, and Amazon will probably roll an update out over the next year or so, as the menu design is fairly ancient. I just feel that with such an incredible device with amazing specifications, battery life, screens etc, that the interface really lets the system down.

Battery life on the Kindle is phenomenal, and by phenomenal I mean pure brilliance. If you read half an hour per day, the Kindle will last one month. Yes, you heard right, an entire month. That is the most impressive feature of the Kindle, we feel.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Kindle has a web browser, which is currently under development but is available on the Kindle right now. Although the screen is black and white, it’s really nice and generous for Amazon to include a web browser, which actually works extremely well.

All in all, the Kindle 4th Generation is the most solid, robust and efficient Kindle model than we’ve ever seen before. It has a beautiful, light, pencil-thin and chic design, with a brilliant quality e-Ink display. It has incredible battery life, lasting a month on a single charge with light usage. Let’s not forget the incredible price (both for the device and for ebooks) that will see people saving money in the long-term by investing in this device. If you were like me, opposed to the whole e-reading generation, I think the Kindle 4 is the perfect device to prove you wrong.

STMBags Alley Small Laptop Bag Review

Product Name: Alley Small.
Product Brand: STMBags.
Type of Product: Laptop bag.
Size: Designed for 13.3″ Macbook Pro’s, will fit most 14″ laptops.

If you’re serious about protecting your Macbook, then you’re probably one of those people that will happily spend one hundred dollars finding a sturdy, solid, stylish and safe bag for your Macbook or Macbook Pro. STMBags is a company that truly encompasses these four traits in all of their bags, especially the 13″ Alley.

STMBags is an Australian company located just minutes away from the world renown Bondi Beach. With an exceptional company mission, thoughtful designs, protection without compromise and the environment in mind, nearly all of their bags are wonderful.

Now, first thing that is noticeable about this case is design. This bag is not simply one slot for your Macbook, but a myriad of pockets, zips, pouches and flaps. If you’re heading off to college or university, this is the bag for you. There’s space to fit textbooks, papers, a pencil case (providing it’s small and thin) and your phone, meaning you can get away with only bringing one bag. STM truly throws out the standard landscape bag and spins this one into portrait, which is an interesting twist that never fails to turn heads. What’s worth noting is that the strap is extremely long, (which we like) and is fully adjustable for whatever height. Far too often, we see laptop bags with short straps that make carrying the bag uncomfortable, so it’s great to see STM giving consumers what we want.

The next point about this bag is protection. The outer lining is a polyester ripstop material, with an inner coating for water resistance. This guarantees you water resistance (from rain or splashes, don’t go jumping into a pool). Then there’s the inner lining which is a water resistant nylon. The duraflex buckles and clips allow for seamless, strong and sturdy clips, which are simply easy to remove. Now, how about where the laptop goes? This is the selling point of a laptop bag, the laptop protection compartment. Thankfully, STM uses EVA padding which ensures a soft, yet secure platform for you to rest your beloved MacBook Pro. High quality load bearing stitching is also used throughout the entire design, so this bag won’t un-thread before your eyes.

The final part to review about the Alley is the price. At only USD $39.99 (AUD $79.95), this is a great price for such a solid product. Of course, it’s not the cheapest on the market, but we feel that for the protection, design, style and innovation of the Alley that it is one of the best value bags on the market.

So what’s bad about the Alley? Nothing. Everything you’d need in a laptop bag is supplied by the Alley, with a few incredible bonus features. Ordinarily, we see cheaply constructed bags that feel and look great, but dwindle down after a few weeks of heavy use. We’ve been testing this product for around a month now, and we can say, without hesitation that this is a great bag. In my personal opinion, it’s the best laptop bag I’ve ever used.

All in all, with a brilliant, stylish design, sturdy, structured build with a myriad of compartments that are waterproof and a cheap price tag, the STM Alley is a brilliant MacBook Pro bag. If you are in the market for a laptop bag, we definitely recommend you give the Alley a try. This bag is flawless in every aspect.

Speck SeeThru Satin MacBook Pro Review

List Price: $49.95 USD
New From: $34.50 In Stock
Used from: $11.79 In Stock

Even though the MacBook Pro lineup has a completely aluminum enclosure, it is still susceptible to cosmetic damage. In steps the SeeThru Satin case by Speck.

The Speck SeeThru Satin case makes for a very practical way to keep your Macbook Pro (13’ 15’ or 17’) safe from scratches or other user damages. This case is in two pieces and is held onto the body and clamshell by a series of small yet durable clips. These clips are perfectly designed hinder the opening or closing of the clamshell and does not interfere in any way. As advertised, the case is semi-transparent, making the Apple logo on the back of the computer visible through the satin, regardless of color. The Speck SeeThru Satin has a ventilation system directly under the processor, and after testing the computer with very processor-demanding tasks the core temperatures along with other internal temps remained no higher than average. The Speck SeeThru Satin’s exterior offers substantially more grip than the rubber mounts on the bottom of the computer itself, making it much more secure while places on surfaces. The only negative side to this product is while opening and closing this case I realized that clamshell seemed to be much looser than it had before. However this is not the fault of the product itself. After contacting Apple, they described to me that the clamshells center of gravity is so precise that any additions over two ounces can affect its stability.

Overall this is a fantastic product. The Speck SeeThru Satin is very durable, lightweight, and very “cool”. I would rate this case a 4.5 out of 5, the only hindrance being the offset of balance on the display itself. Otherwise this was a phenomenal product and I would advice any Macbook Pro (October 2008 or later) user to buy this case, especially if you want to avoid any cosmetic damage to your device.

Kanex iAdapt V2 – Mini DP to HDMI – Review

Mini DP to HDMI Adapter

We’ve had the chance to play with the Kanex iAdapt V2 over the course of the past few months and we’ve been really impressed.  The iAdapt V2 is a simple but necessary accessory any MacBook Pro or MacBook Air owner needs to have.

The iAdapt V2 is a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI connection, which is of course compatible with the ThunderBolt ports found on the 2011 MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, in addition to the latest iteration of the iMac. This Mini DP to HDMI adapter works with not only the latest generation Macs but also with any previous Macs featuring the Mini DisplayPort.

The adapter (along with a HDMI Cable) is a surely needed accessory for any Mac owner. With the iAdapt V2 anyone can connect his or her MacBook Pro or Macbook Air to an HD display. Whether it’s a HDTV or a (non-Apple) HD Monitor, the iAdapt V2 is a breeze to connect your Mac with a display.

With EDID/ HDCP support and pass through, which gives your Mac the resolution of the connected display – so there’s no need for you to adjust your display to 720P, 1080i, or 1080p because it’s done automatically through the adapter.

The iAdapt V2 is comparable with Apple’s MiniDP to HDMI adapter in terms of pricing and functionality. Like Apple’s counterpart, the Kanex iAdapt V2 is able to send audio via the Mini DisplayPort if your Mac supports it (mid-2010 or later MacBook Pro and MacBook Air). We were quite impressed that the iAdapt V2 supports 7.1-channel audio. We weren’t able to test it with a 7.1-channel receiver but it sounded great with our 5.1-channel receiver.

We think the iAdapt V2 is an amazing adapter for just about anyone with a Mac to use. In terms of quality and reliability, the iAdapt V2 definitely functions amazingly. The only complaint we had throughout the past few months we’ve used the iAdapt  V2 is that it doesn’t seem rugged enough for some environments. We’ve used this all over our home and even took it to some presentations and we haven’t noticed any issues or concerns but we can foresee some having trouble with the adapt.

All in all, we definitely recommend this adapter for anyone who’s looking to connect a Mac to a HDMI display.

Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD Review

Although there are review upon review talking about these headphones, I wanted to state my take on these. I had read reviews myself about these headphones but they were mixed, with some people stating they’re the best headphones they’ve ever owned and some stating they’re the worst and not worth the money so I thought I’d buy them and give them a go. That’s why we’re writing this Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD Review.

With a fairly hefty price tag and the fact these are made by a successful music artist you’d expect these headphones to be the best of the best, but I had mixed feelings with these. The headphones are endorsed by many music artists including the most popular ones in the charts at the minute such as Justin Bieber (who has his own line of Beats headphones), Will.I.Am, Lady Gaga and others which definitely swayed me towards buying them.

I had mixed feelings with these headphones and within this review it will show an unbiased opinion on these unlike many other people who get the headphones sent to them for free. One of the first things that I noticed was the look of the headphones. With most over the ear headphones they do not look that great, which could put some people off buying them but with the Solo HD’s the look of them is most definitely the best part. They’re sleek, stylish, the colour variety is great, they’re light and they just look good in general which is probably the main selling point for these headphones.

The most important thing with headphones is of course the sound, and the sound is impressive with these headphones, I was expected to be let down because usually you pay for the brand rather than the quality but I was pleasantly surprised. The volume can get loud, and with the loudness the sound quality does not go down, it stays impressive no matter what you place the volume on. As soon as the music starts flowing through the headphones it’s just amazing. The bass hits hard and you can definitely hear the bass within the music. If you play a song which heavy bass such as a dance track these headphones will blow your mind. These headphones are not just good for music, they’re good for watching films whether that be on your iPhone, iPad, laptop etc. The surround sound effect and explosions really sound great within the headphones.

Another pro is the control talk section of the headphones. If you’re in the middle of a song and you get a phonecall, the recipient will not be able to tell if you’re using the mobile itself or an accessory, the sound quality of the control talk microphone is that good.

In my Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD Review, I had a problem with about these headphones is the comfort of them. This was the biggest problem I had with these, and definitely influenced my opinion of them. They are not comfortable headphones. When put on the ears, they are comfortable for around 5 minutes and then they start to press down and start to hurt and become uncomfortable to wear. This is a big no no for me as headphones need to be comfortable as I usually wear them for an hour or two at a time as I travel quite a bit and music or movies are my way of keeping occupied.

Another problem with these headphones is the build quality, within other Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD reviews this is also a big problem for others. When holding the headphones they do not feel sturdy and they also feel they could snap fairly easily, and this is a big problem considering you are paying £160/$170 for the pair.
The last problem I had with these headphones is the fact the sound leaks out of the headphones. I’m sure I’m not alone in this and saying that I like my music loud. When listening to music I like to put it on the highest volume, but with these headphones it’s not possible as the sound leaks out a great deal. The sound that leaks out is the same volume as some speakers which will definitely annoy the surrounding people.

Overall, I liked the headphones look and sound but I still had to return them as they cause me pain to my ears and I didn’t like how uncomfortable they were. Except for the comfort I would recommend these headphones if the comfort was improved as the sound and look of these are very impressive. If I were to buy another pair of Beats by Dr. Dre I would upgrade to the studios as these headphones seem bigger and more comfortable. If I do ever get a pair, I will review them and let you know my unbiased opinion of these.

If you’d like to check out more details on the Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD you can find them directly from Monster. I also think you check out our opinion on the Best Headphones for around $100.

Seagate GoFlex for Mac Portable Review

We recently got the chance to play with the Seagate GoFlex for Mac Portable (1TB) and I’m really glad we’ve had this opportunity. As the title indicates, this drive is for Mac. Admittedly, it was also designed with a Mac in mind. The drive blended in seamlessly with my MacBook Pro and our iMac too. This drive performs extremely well and has only a few quirks associated with it. We’ve had the chance to try out hard drives from nearly every manufacturer in the industry and we must say, in the Consumer Mac Hard Drives sections, this hard drive definitely marked up at the top.

Design

This hard drive follows the design of the latest generation of Macs. If it were made of aluminum rather than slip-resistant plastic, I’d be just about certain that this drive was designed over at Cupertino. The hard drive looks as if it were designed specifically for the MacBook Pro while in the drawing room. The aesthetics of the design are definitely pleasing and we haven’t really been left with much to say.

The hard drive’s design also allows for the ports to be interchanged easily. With a simple pull, you can remove the FireWire 800 adapter and insert a USB 2.0 (or even 3.0) adapter and carry on. We’ve been able to consistently change between our MacBook Pro and PC to transfer files and all of the like by just switching out the ports. Obviously, the benefits seen by using FireWire 800 aren’t there for USB 2.0 but it’s still very convenient as many machines don’t have FireWire 800 ports as commonly available as they are on Macs.

Performance

We’ve had the chance to review some of the best professional hard drives on the market and the Seagate GoFlex for Mac, while not quite up to the levels of the professional drives, really surprised us with its performance. Clocking in at around 24 Mbps Read/ Write via USB 2.0 we were definitely impressed with the drive both on our PC and MacBook Pro. We were also impressed by the performance with FireWire 800, where the drive reached speeds of up to 41 Mbps read/ write. With such speeds we were able to contently use this drive as a scratch disk for our video production on Final Cut X. In addition, I backed up my MacBook Pro on this hard drive via Time Machine and the times to backup my data were more than impressive too.

Features

This drive is packed with features and capabilities that other drives just don’t have. Our two favorite features that the Seagate GoFlex for Mac Portable provides? We love the fact that we can format this drive as HFS+ for Mac and still use it on a Windows 7 counterpart – with no noticeable downfalls. Seagate offers software via it’s website that allow Windows systems to work with HFS+ formatted drives natively from the Operating System.

We also love the interchangeability in this drive between USB 2.0 and FireWire 800 and the option to buy new adapters for other interfaces like USB 3.0 and in the future, ThunderBolt. The drive is enclosed in a hard plastic shell but there’s a slight opening in the back of the drive that allows access to the internal drives SATA port. Each adapter is basically a SATA to Interface Connector – which allows for such versatility. However, one minor concern that we had is the fact that the adapters, namely the FireWire 800, had a tendency to get rather warm when being used.

Overall Experience

We think that this is an amazing drive that can perform just about any task that consumers may give it. Whether it’s Backups, iTunes, Movies, or amateur Video Production – this drive has got you covered with it’s durability and versatility between systems. Except for the few kinks we pointed out, like the mild warmth felt on the adapter during heavy use, we think that this drive is perfect for any person looking for buy a good portable hard drive for her Mac.

We give this drive a great 4.5 out of 5 Stars. Keep the great work coming along Seagate!

HD25-1 II Review

Sennheiser HD25-1 II Review

When you’re shopping for something and you see it’s been available for a decade, you’d normally be drawn away from it. This shouldn’t always be the case, and we have the perfect example to show you why. The Sennheiser HD 25-1 II headphones are over a decade old. “Wow, over a full decade ago and this is still selling?” With how fast technology advances you’d think that, but headphones really haven’t changed much in a price/performance ratio in the past few decades. The headphones retail for $299.95 USD, but the street price is much less. You can easily find it for around $200. While, even at $200, this may seem like a ridiculous price for headphones considering your iPod came with free ones, you should really try them out first before so quickly judging them. We discuss why the Sennheiser HD25-1 II are definitely worth it in this HD25-1 II Review.

These are labeled as “DJ” headphones by Sennheiser, but really could be and are used by many average people. In our review of the HD25-1 II, we found that you can definitely use it at home or on the go with your iPod, computer, or anything for audio/music. Now you may have seen these before without knowing it. If you’ve ever watched football or even “The Longest Yard” you may have noticed the headphones that announcers wear. These are a full black color with a microphone sticking out and wires hanging down from the side. In our review, we found that HD 25-1 II (not to be confused with the similar looking, but different sounding HD 25 and HD 25 SP) doesn’t have a microphone, but otherwise is the exact same thing they’re wearing. That really says something doesn’t it? It’s been adopted as a standard for announcers and here’s why. In my HD25-1 II Review, I found that the announcers definitely have a good reason to use this pair of headphones over others.

The 5 ounce headphones are portable, and this is emphasized very much by Sennheiser and also understood by me, as I did this HD25-1 II Review. These are considered the flagship portable headphone by European audio company Sennheiser. There are two versions, the original full black version and the Adidas version which is black and has blue designs on it and a blue cable. Both are the same in everything except appearance. These headphones feature an on-the-ear design. A unique feature of the HD 25-1 II is the headband. In our HD25-1 Review, we found that it has pleather pads to cushion your head but the unique feature is that it can split. Normally, headphones have one headband that arcs on your head, but this has two. This can be useful for adjusting the comfort when it is on your head. The ear-cups are length-adjustable and the left cup has a swivel feature which allows you to listen to audio on one side and listen to outside noise on the other. The cable which has a 3.5mm end (works with most audio sources including computers/laptops, iPods, iPads, media players, amplifiers, and more) comes out of the right side only, which can prove useful to some people. These headphones have a feature which is very important, but only to some people. They are very adjustable; you can change the ear-pads, the cable, the headband, and even the ear-cups themselves. It’s pretty much adjustable from the bottom up. You can pretty much take apart everything and replace parts to your desire (although most probably don’t need to do this).

From my review of the HD25-1 II Review, I found that the sound is exceptionally good for the price of $200 and can beat much of the competition in the same price range. Now these may not be as good as over-ear headphones, but who wants to wear over-ear headphones in public? (If you plan to only wear these headphones at home I suggest you look for over-ear headphones instead). At low volume, these headphones do not sound very good. It’s at higher volumes that they really bring out the sound and you can have a fun time listening to these. The sound is clear and does well with highs, mediums, and lows. The bass is great and will be exceptionally fine everyone except maybe some bass-heads, but don’t worry; these headphones will deliver a fine amount of heavy yet non-distorted bass unless you really can’t live without bass that shakes your head. The headphones overall sound very smooth which can be good for most people, but it also can give a negative effect to the clarity. The main problem is in the highs and mediums. I really enjoy clarity in the highs and mediums but this gives a little bit of smoothness which makes sounds such as the cymbal and piano sound smoother than I think they should. The soundstage is decent and can be fine for most, but for some it can be too narrow in that there isn’t a very clear separation between different instruments and voices. These can sound fine with ipods and average media players but am improvement in sound and soundstage may be noticed if an amplifier and aac/flac (and other high quality audio files) are used. Overall, the sound of these is very good for the price and can sound great with all genres from hip hop to rock, to electronic, but for those who enjoy classical music, the smoothness may affect many instruments.

Package contents are basic, nothing too special. The original black version has the headphones themselves with the 3.5mm (1/8th inch) plug cable, black pleather pads (already on the headphones), black velour pads (not in all versions), a 6.35 mm plug adapter to put on the included cable’s 3.5mm plug in case you want to use it with devices that only have 6.35 mm (1/4th inch) slots, and a carrying case (which doesn’t really provide much protection, but does allow you to carry it while keeping it lightweight and small). The blue Adidas version has the same contents but with a blue cable, blue pleather pads, white velour pads, and come in a blue box designed to look like an Adidas shoe box. Pleather is artificial leather and velour is a plush, soft fabric.

The Sennheiser HD 25-1 II headphones are considered by many to be one of the best portable on-ear headphones released. I myself prefer earbuds for portable use but after these HD25-1 II Review, I’ve began to reconsider. I use these headphones at home but don’t plan to be using them on-the-go often. The reason why is because mainly I’m not into wearing headphones in public as an accessory. Some people can pull it off, but I’m not sure about me. These headphones definitely do look great though. They don’t look too flashy and aren’t too bulky and big. If you want extra style points you can go for the Adidas version if you’re willing to spend around an extra $30-$50 bucks USD. Secondly, while these are certainly smaller than many of the over-ear headphones, they’re still not very convenient for me. I’d congratulate you if you could put these in your pocket. The only time a carry around a bag is usually at school, and in which case, my time to wear these is limited and I’m not a fan of pulling out headphones for every minute of free time I get, I like to sit down and enjoy, not rush and try to finish a song before class starts The swivel design is not useful to me. I struggled to find pros about this. There are no cons about it, it’s more neutral. I prefer leaving the two headbands together. The pleather pads were alright but can be uncomfortable to many. I prefer the velour pads as they are soft and also reduce bass and give the highs more strength. I do enjoy the sound but I prefer on-the-ear headphones more due to the wider soundstage and more clarity in most of them. The comfort of these headphones is decent for most, but can be too tight on the head for some. The tightness may go away after the headphones adjust to your head. If they don’t, you can do some adjustments and try to widen the headband. The durability of these headphones is great. Even though they don’t look very expensive and are made out of mostly plastic, these are very durable. People have even owned these for a decade and claim they’re still functioning. These are the kind of headphones you could just throw in a bag without having to worry about them breaking. Overall, these are great headphones for the price. I do recommend these headphones to most people. The only people I don’t recommend these to are people who enjoy clarity over anything else and people who would only use these at home (in which case I would recommend over-ear headphones).

Logitech G400 Review (Optical Gaming Mouse)

Logitech G400 Review

Looking for a mouse without all the fancy doohickeys, but at the same time is an upgrade over that black, 3 dollar, generic mouse that came bundled with your old desktop? Speak no more; Logitech’s newly revised mouse is here, replacing the five-year old MX 518, is the G400 Optical Gaming Mouse.  The G400 is not just for gamers though, just looking at the mouse you could see it as a simple-looking mouse, with a few extra features that you could grow to love. Check out our Logitech G400 Review for our take on this mouse.

The Logitech 6400 Review

Design

The mouse has a nice looking design that is not too flashy like its predecessor the MX 518. In our Logitech G400 Review, we found that Logitech got rid of the glossy exterior (excluding the Logitech logo smack-dab in the middle). The grey surface area is a smooth plastic, which, even with that late-night gamer sweat, will give a firm grip for your palm. The fingerprint magnet is located on the Logitech logo, so don’t worry much about that (it’s not that noticeable). The black sides are softer and are ergonomically shaped for your thumb and pinky (I should mention that this is a right-handed mouse). The cave on the left side for your thumb is very roomy, yet the side for your pinky looks more like a dent, requiring that bit of extra energy your pinky shouldn’t have to be using for grip. Most of you probably had no idea there was more than one type of mouse grip (why should you?), neither did I until recently, but this is important to bring up. I have small hands, yet this mouse seems to want me to use a claw grip. A claw grip is where your hand looks like a claw. I find the palm grip much more comfortable, where you simply rest your whole hand on the mouse. The mouse is pretty average sized, but my fingers extend a bit too far to use all the buttons comfortably. I shouldn’t list this as a negative, as this is a gaming mouse, and gamers tend to use the claw grip, but I felt it was necessary to talk about it.

Logitech G400 Review

There are three sliding-feet at the bottom of the mouse which slide very well. In our Logitech G400 Review, we found it works smoothly with some $2 office depot mouse pad we found lying around, and worked even better (just slightly) on a SteelSeries soft mouse pad. On a hardwood table, it works alright, but don’t expect too much (it can also greatly reduce the lifetime of the sliding-feet).

There are a total of 8 buttons. Left and right, middle, forward and back, + and – DPI, and default DPI. Based on what I saw when doing this G400 Review, using Logitech’s provided software, you can customize the button functions, change the DPI settings, and choose from a large choice of game-specific profiles. The left and right buttons have firm clicks; same goes for the forward and back buttons on the left side. The DPI buttons are the three little buttons in front of, and behind, the scroll wheel. They’ve proved very useful to me, though I normally just keep it on the standard setting. The scroll wheel is smooth and easy to scroll, yet still firm. The middle mouse button is easy to click; a feature that I struggle to find in many mice. The left, right, middle, forward, and back buttons are all improvements over little brother MX 518. The G400 mice have quieter and easier to click buttons.

Performance

The mouse is very simple to use. This is definitely something we liked, in this Logitech G400 Review. If you don’t care for DPI or forward and back buttons, they can be ignored. Still worried they’ll get in the way? You can disable them. This mouse is plug n’ play, but by downloading the free Logitech mouse software, you can customize it how you’d like. The software allows you to change every single button to whatever you want.

The 3600 DPI sensor definitely shows, and while those 5600 dpi gaming mice may seem intimidating, this mouse definitely holds up. Add this with the “polytetrafluoroethylene” feet *whew* and consistent response ratio, and it’s as smooth as butter. The 1 ms report rate means practically no lag. I’m sure no human could see any lag. The DPI shift with the DPI buttons, as I mentioned, is very useful, especially in photo editing programs and games.

The mouse feels very durable and I greatly enjoy changing out that glossy plastic on the MX 518 that got really cold when left in my room. The buttons are enjoyable to use and are better than the MX 518’s buttons. The sculpted comfort grip looks the same as the one on the MX 518 but feels much smoother and softer to touch.

This mouse is definitely a keeper. This mouse works very well with general use and works like a charm in games. It is such a big improvement over the MX 518, I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a standard mouse, and would greatly recommend it to anyone with an MX 518 who is looking for an upgrade.
